Let’s go Eastern Europe

May 5, 2007

The Holiday wish List:
where you going on holiday? Kayaking in the Andes, golfing in Portugal or sunbathing in Thailand? Face it, everybody needs a holiday from time to time. A change of air, a different environment, meeting new people or simply taking time for yourself can really be of benefit. How many times do people asking “where shall we go this year?” Is it to be hot or cold, adventure or boring, sun or shopping, city or countryside? – wherever the destination of holiday, I might need some new shoes – help!

There are as many different holiday options as there are people wanting to take a holiday! So I checked my holiday wish list and trying to figure out which country I would love to visit this time. Cuba – too far for 1 week holiday, Transsiberian will be different but again not enough for 1 week only. Then Eastern Europe ….. mm.. yeah Let’s go to Eastern Europe, and Budapest seems a great destination. Why?

1.Splendid location
Budapest was created by the unification of Buda and Obuda on the hilly west bank of the Danube and Pest on the flat east bank in 1873. About 30 years before that the first of the present 9 bridges, the Chain Bridge, was constructed. Today in has become the symbol of the city. The Buda view including the Castle District with the royal palace and the Matthias Church, and Gellert Hill with the Citadel is a World Heritage site.
2. City of medicinal baths
Budapest is the world’s only city and capital where there are more than 80 thermal springs and wells. From these about 70 million litres of water come to the surface daily. The number of baths in the capital which are fed by natural medicinal springs or drilled thermal wells approaches fifty. Among these there are Turkish baths in their original state, open-air pools and elegant Jacuzzis, but hospitals and spa hotels serving all needs have also been built on the healing waters. Some medicinal waters are suitable for treating digestive complaints, kidney and metabolic diseases by means of drinking curses.

3. Caves and nature reserves
The Buda side is the capital’s green belt with popular spots for outings. Janos Hill, Szechenyi Hill, Hars Hill, Remete Hill and Harmashatar Hill are parts of the nature reserve area of Buda. Beneath the hills lie interconnected cave system. The country’s third longest(7.200m) stalactite cave, Palvolgyi cave, can be seen here as well as the Szemlo Hill cave, famous for its peastone formations resembling bunches of grapes.

4. Ancient roman culture
The medicinal springs were already known at the time of the Romans. Their town built in today’s Obuda was for this reason called Aquincum (aqua=water). The remains of the Roman towns, military camps, baths and aqueducts can still be seen in Budapest today. In the museum in Aquincum among the ruins and remains of the civilian town a portable water organ made in 228 can be seen.

The Plan:

Plans, arrangement and preparations detailed. And now, money can be spend. After a few days browsing the net and I really want to make this trip perfect and fit with our budget. There’s some only travel company offered the package (incl. Flight, Hotel). but we decided to book directly at their own website for our flight. Sky Europe appeared to fly from Amsterdam to some other destinations in Europe. And if you’re lucky you can get a return ticket for only € 0.02 with plus € 50 airport tax. It is very cheap. It’s too good to be true. Too bad – no ticket available with that price on the date we wished to go. In the end we will fly to Budapest with KLM…. go Dutchies go..

I used the internet again to find a good place to sleep. I found many hotels, but eventually I saw this website with apartments, They offered a lot of privacy in the middle of the city centre of Pest with a very good deal price 😉 The better choice than staying at the hotel.

We will have 6 days exploring the city – It will be a lot to see. Budapest – Bratislava only 200km away. The capital city of Slovakia and Budapest – Vienna  only 245km.. hmmm…

Price:

Flight from € 60 – 250 per person incl. airport tax

Hotel/Apartment: from € 50 – 250 per night

Broek in Waterland

Broek in Waterland

Kalau pernah mendengar cerita Alice in wonderland… yang satu ini cerita tentang Broek in Waterland.Tapi Broek bukan gadis kecil berambut pirang seperti Alice.

The borough is a combination of well-known villages of which a good number stand on the Zuiderzee. Inland there stands Broek in Waterland. Traces of one of the richest women of the 17th century Netherlands East India Company era, Neeltje Pater, can still be found in and around the church. Many houses from that time with grey painted wooden facades have been preserved. In the middle of the countryside there stand the old reclamation villages of Ilpendam, Watergang and Zuiderwoude. The Waterland nature area is an important breeding site for meadow and marsh birds.Biking to Broek in Waterland from Amsterdam – follow the Volendam Route.Start your morning at 11 a.m. from Amsterdam get our bikes fitted and ready, and head off for the ferry across the Het IJ to North Holland.

We’ll enter the region – Waterland – and follow the cycle path along the Zeedijk passing old gabled houses in Durgerdam, Uitdam and to the former island of Marken – with its 13th century wooden houses and townspeople dressed in traditional costume.

We follow the inland sea to charming Monnickendam (scroll down to read the article) – boasting a beautiful harbor where its oldest trade, shipbuilding, is still thriving.

Pedaling still north along the water, we’ll stop by Katwoude to visit a working mill and a cheese farm to see how cheese is made.

Time permitting we will head east to visit Broek in Waterland and then across the Purmer Polder into Volendam.

Walking in The Rain – Mount. Halimun

February 26, 2007

after a couple of weeks postponed, finally 6 of us – salla, theres, charlie, nina, miumiu and moi – made it to Mt. Halimun National Park in Sukabumi area last weekend.

A leisure trekking to the largest mountaineous tropical rain forest in Java. The long & ‘tacky’ road that had to be taken to reach the area is the one of the reason we couldn’t made a ‘full’ exploration of the foreplanned spots to be visit and of course, the warm blanket in the cloudy weather made it more difficult…

one day is definetely not sufficient to do the exploration & to enjoy the biodiversity of flora, fauna, waterfalls, mountains offered by this forest!

Anyway, we did enjoy the 3 km jungle trekking, walking on the 100 m canopy trails (suspended bridges at about 25-30 meters from the ground and connected by 5 huge trees), dipping in Macan Waterfalls (what’s better that playing in the water after such a trek? ), smelling the afternoon breeze at Nirmala tea plantation **and saw the black eagle…. uugghh, he’s flying so beautifully!!). To end the day, watched glowing mushroom in the pitch dark nite at the jungle! It felt like seeing so many stars on the ground!!

‘Reserved’ for next visit to this misty forest: Citalahab Village, Curug Piit, Curug Cikudapaeh, Ciptagelar Village….

Carnaval in Germany

February 26, 2007

Cerita karnaval-an

Mungkin adanya pas perayaan 17-an atau hari kartini.

Hahahaha every girls favorite J

Sebelum puncak karnaval (Rosenmontag) di Cologne, hari-hari sebelumnya karnaval dirayakan di kota-kota diluar kota
Cologne. Saya nonton karvanal di desa
Solingen. Yang di hadiri oleh 15.000 orang saja. Disana penduduk berpesta 2 malam suntuk. Satu kota mabuk….. seru banget.

The city is turned upside down… Very nice.

February 23, 2007

Weekend hideaway or just one day away? Voila a surprise place for nice weekend trip to
Solingen. Around 2 hours by car from Amsterdam. SOLINGEN, Germany, in Westphalia, near the Rhine river, stands on a hill bordering the
Wupper
River, 20 miles northeast of
Cologne. It has Catholic and Protestant churches, a synagogue, schools of various grades, hospital, electricity and all the conveniences of a modern town. It is a center of steel and iron industry in
Germany.

The municipality was established in 1374 and the town became famous for its sword-blades. There are numerous metal factories which turn out fine cutlery, copper and brass-ware, and surgical instruments, etc., while several thousand workmen make small articles of cutlery at home. In addition, there are paper, linen, cotton, silk, soap and other factories. Solingen cutlery as been famous since medieval times and is supposed to have been introduced by crusaders from
Damascus. Pop. 165,000 in 1997. (“Wappen” translates to standard in English}

After a long drive, we got to the guesthouse in Solingen-burg – a nice small local hotel with a friendly owner. We arrived at the hotel same as before the night camedown.  A nice clean hotel.  The room was in the attic with living room separate from the bedroom,  big windows and wireless internet connection free € 50 euro per-night including breakfast in their restaurant or in the room. We spent our Saturday to walk around the Solingen-Burg. Went up  to schloss burg. and yes this is called Schloss Burg which when translated means palace castle. Schloss Burg Castle, A few kilometers from Solingen, is located the Schloss Burg (Castle Berg), home to the Counts of Burg, who initially used the site as a fortress beginning about 1000 A.D. during the time of the crusades. Today it is a part of the 600 year old, world renowned flatware center of Solingen, and was the actual capital of the

Bergische
Land during the Middle Ages. It was the seat of the Counts of Burg, who ruled their delightful little realm from here.
Well it’s Solingen Burg really and it’s astoundingly beautiful a real castle not a palace with everything you would picture of a castle. It’s German .

After made around in the caste we stop at the restaurant and had a yummy Deutschen Küche The Hausgemachte bauernsülze and also enjoy the traditional große bergische Kaffeetafel :

Waffel, Kaffee, Hefeblatz oder Rosinenstuten, verschiedene bergische Brotsorten (Schwarz- und Graubrot), Honig, Birnen-, Apfel- oder Rübenkraut, Konfitüre, Butter, Quark, Käse, Wurst und Schinken, Milchreis mit Zucker und Zimt

Or translate in English :

Waffel, Coffee, raisin bread, different sorts of bergische bread (black bread and grey bread), honey, pears herb, apple herb or beet herb, jam, butter, curds, cheese, sausage and ham, round-grain rice with sugar and cinnamon…. Lekker!

The unique Coffee/breakfast table “die Bergische Kaffeetafel”. Came from the famous old tradition from this area (bergische land). The price for one person :  € 7 (not so bad for that big meal).Receipe for creme waffle (hard waffle) • 250 g butter or margarine • 100 g sugars • 1 packet Vanilli -sugar • 4 Eigelb • 125 g wheat flour • 125 g Gustin • 6 g (2 gestr.  Teaspoon) Baking powder • 1/4 l creme

• oil

Jakarta Underwater

February 2, 2007

(photo from BBC News)
Banjir lagi.. banjir lagi.. Halaaah…
Raining in Jakarta = Problems, No Rain in Jakarta = (also) Problems

Banjir lagi? UUuuh the old excuse it’s not funny anymore. The Jakarta floods is become trendy eachyear. The big national problem.

It’s raining season in Indonesia. Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia (40 percent of the city is below sea level) is struggling again now with heaviest flooding after 2 days raining. I was trying to call my parents, relatives and friends. Mmmmhhh…. no connection at all from regular phone. But finally got through via cellulars. They said the Telkom has problem. Grrrrrrrr….. I know that My parents will be safe place. Their home is in the high level area of South Jakarta. That can give me a good sleep at night. But how about the rest of family and friends?

As I can remember, Jakarta is turning to a very mmm… busy and busy city. Everytime I came back to Jakarta – I got a lot of headaches hehehe… for me – the village girl, Jakarta was too busy, too crowded. Too many cars, too many people, too long trafficjam, too many new massive buildings, giant shopping malls, real-estate industries around Jakarta and I believe they builded that without concern for the surrounding environment. Did you ever see the big green area in Jakarta??? No.. absolutely not. The massive real-estate developments surrounding Jakarta have replaced thousands of hectares of irrigated rice paddies, small lakes, and other natural habitats. Some of these estates are even built on water catchment areas. Did you ever realize that?

The worst affected are the poor living in the low-lying areas of the city. Their homes have either been destroyed or badly damaged. They have nothing left. Is Jakarta a victims from bureaucratic indifference and corruption???
